Spencer's for Steaks and Chops: A Bit of Tuscany in SeaTac

Since its opening on October 24, 2000, Spencer's for Steaks and Chops has been quietly delighting business travelers and local residents with its stately, inviting Old World charm.  At breakfast, dinner, or the 50 minute guaranteed lunch, you will find exquisite cuisine in a setting that reminds one of Tuscany, Italy.

Located adjacent to the lobby of the all new Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel, this 5400-square foot dining room and bar comfortably accommodates up to 146 patrons and includes a private dining room which can seat 24 or host cocktail parties for up to 50 guests.  Secretaries and concierges who call and book reservations personally receive $2 per person in Spencer's credit to be used at their leisure.

September 11 brought an eight week drop in receipts which has been rebuilding slowly. Restaurant Manager, Aimee Smith, attributes their renewed growth to corporate America's return to the skies.  A normal decline in sales occurs the week before Christmas and lasts through January.  To combat this aberration, the managers of Spencer's will be randomly handing out $20 off coupons to guests that can be used at the restaurant in the month of January.

Spencer's, named for a special 22 ounce cut of bone-in rib eye steak, features an extensive menu of USDA Prime Midwestern corn fed beef, select chops and seafood.  Only 2-3% of all beef produced in the U.S. can meet this premium grade.  Spencer's well-marbled beef is aged for a minimum of three weeks to achieve maximum tenderness and flavor.  Spencer's steaks and chops are cooked in a state-of-the-art infrared broiler at 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. This process sears the meat so that the juices and flavors are sealed in.

Spencer's other menu highlights include award winning Dungeness crab cakes prepared with tender succulent crab topped with a mustard beurre blanc sauce, double cut lamb and pork chops, seared ahi tuna au poivre, Alaskan Halibut oscar, alder planked King Salmon and for dessert, a 7" high strawberry shortcake.

The restaurant's interior has an open inviting appeal.  Striking are the contrasting oak, mahogany, and cherry floor panels.  The expansive mahogany pillared bar hosts a fully equipped bar that faces the restaurant and on the backside provides shelter for a well stocked espresso and pastry shop.  The espresso store faces the corridor that connects the hotel's lobby with the hotel's elegant new conference center.

The rich jewel tone colors of the restaurant's decor are played out through 15 foot high royal blue velvet drapes in the main restaurant and ten foot high burgundy velvet drapes in the private 50 guest dining room.  These colors beautifully coordinate with the dynamic patterned upholstery and are complimented by the warm earth tones and rich hardwoods throughout the restaurant.  The restaurant's high vaulted ceiling is hand painted with an evening sky mural. Also notable are the restaurant's framed art depicting life size scenes of Pike's Place Market and the warm glowing Tuscany style lamps.  The sounds of Jazz and Big Band music also add to the ambience and buzz of a traditional chophouse.

The restaurant's bar list is one of the most extensive in the Pacific Northwest including 79 Pacific Northwest wines and 77 wines from around the world.  The wines are moderately priced. A lso available are 21 top of the line vodkas and Spencer's 26 Premium Martinis, 14 micro brews on draft, and 4 bottled beers.  After dinner drinks include a variety of coffee drinks, cognacs, ports, single-malt scotches and small batch bourbons.

From business casual to black tie all guests are greeted warmly and are invited by staff to enjoy their dining experience to the fullest.  At breakfast, lunch, and dinner the staff are highly attentive.  At dinner the wait staff are attired in white dinner jackets and black slacks.

Spencer's is already well known in Salt Lake City, Utah and Spokane, Washington as a destination for fine steakhouse dining.  The restaurant's extensive wine list and menu and online reservations service are available online at spencersforsteaksandchops.com

Tukwila Offers Multi-lingual Access Guide

Do you know someone new to the City of Tukwila who speaks only Spanish, Bosnian, Somali, Russian, Vietnamese, or Arabic?

If so, the City's Equity and Diversity Commission is asking your help in distributing the recently produced Tukwila Community Access Guide.  The Access Guide, with text translated into the aforementioned languages, explains how to access essential city services such as police, fire, and human services, as well as offering information on schools, employment, taking the bus, and more.

The Commission -- partnering with the Boeing Company, EthnoView, and the Port of Seattle -- produced the Access Guide to help the non-English speaking populations in Tukwila and surrounding areas.  Now we want to get the Guide to the people who need it.

The Access Guide is available at Tukwila City Hall, the Neighborhood Resource Center, Tukwila School District, WorkSource-Renton, and Airport Jobs Employment Information Center.  Future distribution locations will include area churches.  The Access Guide is also available on two websites: the city's (http://www.ci.tukwila.wa.us) and EthnoView's (http://www.keylinkconcepts.com).  Call Roberta Nelson at 206-433-7182 for questions regarding the Access Guide.

The Equity and Diversity Commission promotes mutual acceptance and appreciation among the races and cultures in the Tukwila Community.  The Commission meets on the first Thursday of each month at 5:15pm in Showalter Middle School.  For more information, call Lucy Lauterbach at 206-433-1834.  Please come and join us

The USO is Alive and Well in SeaTac

When I think of the USO, I see women with 40's and 50's hairstyles, elegantly dressed, dancing with soldiers and handing out punch and cookies. I also hear Bob Hope speaking to the troops, crazy comedians, and beautiful entertainers dancing and singing their way into the hearts of soldiers miles from home. Both of these are evocative of the early years of the USO; the days when it was popular to be patriotic...

The USO was chartered by President Roosevelt in May of 1941. Today the USO is chartered by the Congress as a non-profit charitable corporation. It is not a part of the United States Government and receives no federal funds. It is endorsed by the President of the United States and the Department of Defense. Each President has been the Honorary Chairman of the USO since its inception.

The USO mission is to provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to uniformed military Personnel. The original intent of Congress-and enduring style of USO delivery-is to represent the American people by extending a "Touch of Home" to their military members.

The USO still tours with nationally known entertainers, but not much is known about the local USO centers. Our local Puget Sound USO is located in the SeaTac International Airport on the second floor. In existence since July 1966, 35 years, it is only one of three stateside centers open 24 hours a day. There are approximately 40 centers nationally. It is the only center with a shower. Serving approximately 100,000 traveling (flow-through) military personnel a year before September 11, those numbers have diminished. Leaves have been cancelled; we're at war.

Though the flow-through traffic is down, usage is up due to the presence of the National Guard at the airport. Guard members can take their breaks and lunches away from the public eye in the comfortable, home-like surroundings of the USO center. Within the large area that makes up the center, there is a family area, a quiet area, an area to watch TV/movies, a dining area, an area with real beds and even Internet access. Recently a family of three stayed at the facility for a month trying to get back to their base in Japan.

With nine military posts inside a two hour drive from SeaTac, information is the hottest commodity provided to service personnel coming into our international airport.

IT IS TIME TO BE PATRIOTIC - Staffing a 24 hour center requires 122 volunteers monthly. Shifts start at midnight and rotate in four hour increments. Each volunteer commits to a four hour period and can pledge as little as a day a month or more. Volunteers are needed. "You don't think of yourself as a supporter of the military? That's okay. Be a supporter of the women and men in uniform living a tightly disciplined life far from home, sacrificing time with THEIR families to protect OUR families." - Carole King, singer/songwriter

Our local USO is totally supported through donations. The following is a wish list of items needed on a continual basis - Canned Tuna, Corned Beef and Chicken - Mayonnaise (quart size) - Soft Margarine - Fresh Fruit - Chips - Sugar/Sugar Substitute - Cremora-CoffeeMate - Hot Chocolate (large cans) - Tea - Candy - Soda Pop - Paper Plates (large & small) - 6 oz Hot Cups - 8 oz Hot Cups. A few "ultimate items" on their wish list include: A Big Screen Television (we are the only USO that does not have one) - PlayStation One - PlayStation One Analog Controllers - PlayStation Games - Large Refrigerator.

For more information about our local USO, or to make a donation, contact Krista Cossalter-Sandberg at usopsa1@aol.com or 206-246-1908. Check out the national website at http://www.uso.org. It is wonderful.

SeaTac Rotary Works to Improve Community, World

The SeaTac Rotary is currently preparing to undertake an exploratory trip to India starting Dec. 29, 2001 and lasting for three weeks. The project will eventually provide vocational education for women. Rotary members will conduct an exploratory trip to colleges and schools in northern India's town of Rath, located in the state of U.P. Here members will review the region's educational facilities so that the Rotary will be able to identify opportunities to expand learning programs. The Rotary will then fund teacher salaries and purchase learning tools, materials and classroom equipment and furniture.

The Rotary also helps southern King County by providing computers and similar hardware to schools to further local educational processes.

SeaTac Rotary's newest members are: Mr. Paul Conrad, a retired journalist and manager from Tacoma; Mr. Jared Cox, a Bank of America Associate; and Mr. Robert Wray, Jr., President of New Frontier Marketing in Burien.

"Being a local business is more than just opening a store, being a business is getting involved in the community with hopes of making that community a better place," states Mr. Rajiv Nagaich, SeaTac Rotary Membership Chair.

For more information on SeaTac Rotary events, Mr. Nagaich may be contacted by phone at 206-433-1466. Alternatively, you may explore Rotary International's website at http:// www.rotary.org.
