SeaTac Upgrades Governmental Website

On November 6, 2001, the Finance Committee of the City of SeaTac approved the city's new governmental website. On November 7, 2001, the improved website was operational.  Boasting a new format, there are significant improvements to the look, ease of use and legibility of the site. There are some 1,500 files and nearly 1,000 pages associated with the new website.

New online functionality allows users to conduct online searches to find things by service or department, use an online employee directory, report requests for service issues such as potholes and street sign problems and online business license renewal processing. Printable building permit applications, fee schedules and checklists, as well as park facility rental forms are also available. These upgrades to the site include improvements defined through the e-Gov Alliance Project. This statewide project involved several representatives from various local city governments. The Alliance met monthly to discuss strategies for improving city services through electronic means.

The new site is being constructed under the auspices of the City Technology Committee. Delegates from every major department have been meeting monthly to define standards and develop content. This group will continue to meet every month. After talking with other cities involved in website publication, the original plan to contract out website maintenance was modified. Realizing the need for regular, informed maintenance, trained employees from each department are committed to continuously improving the site. To view the site, go to http://www.seatac.wa.gov.

Brandie's Employees Unite to Provide Fantastic Dining Experience

Located at 2825 S 188th Street in close proximity to Pacific Highway and the Sea-Tac International Airport, Brandie's Broiler was opened in July 2001, by lessee, Blia Xiong. Blia, a Laotian native, immigrated to the U.S. from a Thai refugee camp on September 30, 1976, with her small family. That family has grown and is the impetus for opening Brandie's. She has a strong work ethic and desires to pass those principles to her family. One of Blia's many passions is the Hmong Association of Washington of which she's the Board Director.

Family is also important to daughter, Saychai Leenhiavue, who is Brandie's Broiler General Manager. She has made it her goal to hire experienced wait staff with exceptional customer service skills and award-winning personalities. She has succeeded and there's a definite family atmosphere among her staff. During a recent interview at the restaurant, employee Carlos Reyes, shared his homemade tamales with co-workers. Head day server, Patti Mackie is another such employee. A waitress for 33 years, she served at the Blockhouse for 25 years. It's apparent from watching her that she loves her job and her customers love her. She raves about Chef Mark Bagnuk stating, "He makes my job easy." Mark has been cooking for 25 years and has trained with both German and French chefs. A new menu debuting in the near future will feature fresh carved meats including the first mesquite-smoked turkey on Pacific Highway and international specialties. Ben Radka, Brandie's day bartender, is shown right with Blia and Saychai.

Guests love the food, the service and the atmosphere as illustrated by one of the many letters Brandie's receives. A recent patron stated, "I am going to tell everyone I know that your food establishment is an experience not to be missed."

The restaurant previously served the community for 10 years as Schumsky's and two years as Jet City Diner.

Ambaum Family Dental Emphasizes Family Involvement

Dr. Calvin Kim, a 2000 graduate of Loma Linda University, opened the Ambaum Family Dental Clinic on September 16, 2000. The well-established, 25-year-old clinic was purchased from Dr. Fred Quarnstrom and is located at 14212 Ambaum Blvd. SW, Suite 203, in Burien, Wash.

A cheerful office staff greets you as you enter the newly remodeled, oak adorned clinic. Your first thought is "warm and homey". Several white candles further enhance the clinic's welcoming atmosphere.

Dr. Kim's staff actively encourages parents and siblings to comfort small children during treatment, displaying his family-friendly dentistry techniques. Rebekka Paulsen (pictured right), 3, recently experienced her first dental appointment. Her initial examination showed two molars with significant decay. Both teeth were treated and filled with the use of non-intrusive medication - the comfort of sister Joanne Paulsen, 9. A trip to the ever-popular toy chest completed Rebecca's first trip to the dentist. She looks forward to her next visit. Her parents, Glynn and Elizabeth Paulsen, also felt they received the best dental care ever at Ambaum Family Dental.

Dr. Kim is an active member of the Southwest King County Chamber of Commerce. While attending Loma Linda, Dr. Kim spent many of his school breaks on missions' trips providing dental care to people in Mexico and Fiji. He has taught ballroom dancing in and around the community. Dr. Kim treats patients of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. He also speaks fluent Korean.

Providing dental healthcare is very important to the entire staff of the Ambaum Family Dental Clinic. Dr. Kim accepts patients who have private insurance, government-assisted insurance, or are self-pay. Office hours are 9-5:30 Mon., Wed. and Fri and 10-7 Tues. and Thurs; to make an appointment, call (206) 242-2466.

Building Business in Burien, SeaTac, and Tukwila

In early 1999 Elizabeth Paulsen (pictured right), President of Cascade e-Commerce Solutions, Inc., began to feel a passion for boosting business in Burien, SeaTac, and Tukwila, Wash. She recognized that the region had huge potential. Businesses of all sizes and types can thrive in this diverse and exciting area.

She began to monitor local media such as radio, television stations and area newspapers.  Interacting with networking groups such as Business Networking International, Chamber, and Rotary organizations, she sought to discover whether these organizations fully understood the opportunity for working together to create an even more vibrant business community across the three cities.  While all these organizations play a role in supporting local businesses, she observed none seemed to combine their strengths with effective use of the Internet and most did not focus strongly on the specific cities of Burien, SeaTac, and Tukwila.

Next Elizabeth began to study the various modes of communicating through the Internet (UseNet groups, on-line chat, web based bulletin boards, and opt-in e-mail) to discover the best mode for building the local business community. She experimented with each one and then settled on opt-in e-mail as it gives the writers and readers the most choice and is not intrusive to regular work processes.

With this first edition, a dream is birthed. Sign up to receive this newsletter on a regular basis (every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month) so that you can receive news about area businesses and learn about opportunities to share news concerning your business with other readers.
