Kilroy Airport Center Stands Strong Amid Fluctuating Economy

    

The Kilroy Airport Center office complex, located on South 180th and International Blvd., has successfully come of age to be a prominent location for commerce in the Pacific Northwest region.  Unfortunately, the Boeing Company's Airplane-On-Ground Division, a highly valued office tenant of the Kilroy Airport Center, which occupies the entire North Tower consisting of approximately 211,000 square feet, has elected to exercise their termination option effective Dec. 31, 2002.

    

It appears the Boeing Company's decision to exercise its December 2002 termination option at the Kilroy Airport Center is simply another outcome of the downturn in airplane production and the outfall of Sept. 11, 2001.

 

However, in spite of Boeing's decision, Cleita Harvey, Vice President of Trammell Crow Company who will spearhead the team in re-letting the premises, said, “The Kilroy Airport Center buildings are high-quality 'Class A' facilities that are dominant facilities in the south Seattle office market and are an attractive option for tenants seeking office space.”

 

According to Steven Emery, Kilroy Realty Corporation Vice President, the Kilroy Airport Center is strong in its diversity of tenant lessees, and the strategic location of the office complex is very appealing to companies with local, national and international office space needs.  

 

The Kilroy Airport Center office complex consists of three buildings located directly across from the SeaTac International Airport; the twin South and North Towers, both are 11 story structures, and the northern Building III is a low-rise four-story structure, housing SeaTac City Hall and the Port of Seattle.  The South Tower was built in 1975, and the North Tower  and Building III were built in 1980, all developed, owned and managed by Kilroy Realty Corporation.  The North Tower comprises 211,000 square feet of "Class A" office space, with the entire Kilroy Airport Center complex offering 533,000 square feet of office space.

 

Kilroy Realty Corporation, formerly known as Kilroy Industries, was established in 1947 by John B. (Jim) Kilroy.  Kilroy Industries and its affiliates established a distinguished reputation in developing and managing large fee-span, high technology, high-rise and industrial buildings.  According to both Emery and Harvey, Jim Kilroy has been known as "one of the forefathers of high-tech facilities."

 

Kilroy Realty Corporation ("KRC") was formed as a public company trading on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in January 1997. Never heard of The Riviera? Well, you will. It's coming and savvy diners will be impressed with the changes when Vic's Broiler metamorphoses into The Riviera - located in the Best Western at 15901 W Valley Highway in Tukwila, Wash.

During its Longacres Race Track heyday, Vic's Broiler made money hand over fist. The size of the venue really demonstrates how busy Vic's used to be at the peak of their success. However, when Longacres moved, business dwindled. Six years ago the property was sold. For approximately two years, profits were up and things looked good for the new owners. However, a sluggish economy soon took its toll. 

Realizing the need to reestablish this enterprise, owners hired Kia Karimi, on September 4, 2001, as their new General Manager. Kia, who recently received his Masters in Hospitality from Cornell University, came to Vic's with 26 years experience in the Hospitality Industry. This native of Rome has traveled extensively in Europe and brings a wealth of cutting edge knowledge to the table.

The transformation will begin using the ageless theme of Roman Mediterranean. Dual waterfall fountains, pumping a gargantuan 9000 gallons of water an hour, will grace the beautifully lit outside entrance. Bacchus, the Roman god of Wine and Venere di Mare the Roman Venus of the Sea will greet you upon your arrival. The sports bar, scheduled for official opening February 3, will be ornamented with classic Greek Olympian statues and provide ample sports viewing on approximately ten televisions located throughout the lounge. The dining room has a magnificently designed Roman rain garden. Large coliseum pillars topped with trailing ivy set a wonderful stage for a romantic evening amid soothing sounds of rain. Rich royal blues and golds will be boldly displayed in fabrics and artwork. 

The Riviera is featuring signature breakfast items including fresh-baked breads, Danish and muffins. Sizzling breakfast platters include their very own mouth-watering sausage, seasoned and packed onsite. The lunch menu will abound with ever-popular items such as Reuben Sandwiches and Fish and Chips. Lunches, with a casual atmosphere, are guaranteed 15 minutes from the time the order is placed. A complete transformation, however, will take place between lunch and dinner. No longer casual, linens and stemware will grace each table. The ambiance at dinner will appeal to even the most sophisticated clientele. 

Using the slogan "Cuisines of the World", Chefs Charles and Sammy are designing a bold new menu. Eight to ten selections will be spotlighted each evening, depending upon seasonal items and availability. Discerning patrons will have a variety of options that might include such delicacies as Chilean Sea Bass with Persian Basmati crunchy rice as well as decadent desserts. Distinctively designed, The Riviera's beautiful leather menus will contain one page per menu item. Each page will include one entrée with a description of its native origin, a basic ingredient listing and a recommended wine and dessert. An erudite diner who enjoys unique dishes will take pleasure in the ever-changing menu. This diversity of scrumptious and exclusive menu items will set The Riviera in a class of its own. 

The lounge is a beautiful venue that has been sitting dormant. To turn this around, live entertainment is now playing every Saturday evening and will soon expand to Fridays. Also in the works are comedy shows, fashion shows and, possibly, art shows. The show kitchen will, hopefully, be turned into a beautiful copper kitchen worthy of hosting celebrity chefs and local wineries.

Exciting events are slated this weekend - Friday and Saturday - Los Orchids and the Valley Girls are playing a fundraiser for the Colima Theatre in Mexico. All proceeds will help fund the restoration of this 200-year-old theater located in Mexico. The following week - Saturday, Feb 2, the Junior Cadillacs will be playing for their 31st birthday bash. Both will likely be sold out. The large lounge will then be the host location for The Point radio station's VIP Super Bowl Party on Sunday, February 3, with a live broadcast and lots of giveaways.

Highline Community Hospital Patient-Centered Care & Cookies, Too!  

Highline Community Hospital (HCH) was opened in 1958 under the name Burien General Hospital. In 1978, the name was changed to Highline Community Hospital to reflect its new status as a community controlled, non-profit hospital. Located at 16251 Sylvester Road SW, this once small hospital has grown in its size and philosophy. 

AARP's Modern Maturity named Highline Community Hospital as one of the top 15 "Hospitals With Heart" in their July/August 2001 issue. They stated, "In the past 10 years, hospitals around the country have begun adopting the philosophy of patient-centered care. The approach embraces four principles: to treat everyone with dignity; to share unbiased information with patients and their families; to strengthen patients' sense of control; and to collaborate with patients, families and the broader community in deciding how the hospital looks and functions." This approach is also known as the Planetree Philosophy.

Planetree was founded in 1978 by patient, Angelica Thieriot. She experienced several traumatic hospital incidents that troubled her. While the breakthroughs in medicine were phenomenal, she found the lack of personalized patient care appalling. She approached the chief of medicine and shared her vision - a new type of hospital where patients would receive support and healing on all levels. 

HCH became affiliated with Planetree in October of 1993 and is the only hospital in Washington State with this relationship. The HCH website http://www.highlinehealthcarenetwork.org shares the key elements of the Planetree Philosophy which include:

* Access to information for patients and their loved ones.
* Involving friends and loved ones in the health care experience.
* An active program of healing arts.
* A setting that is homelike and welcoming.

Planetree means patient-centered care, or care based on the patient's choices. The Planetree staff does more than simply provide for the physical needs of their patients. They recognize that each person is more than his or her disease; that he or she has a unique set of physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Staff recognizes that each person is part of a larger family, community and culture, and also needs that support when illness comes. Planetree provides a supportive, compassionate and caring atmosphere in a setting that is as home-like as possible. Each patient is provided information and encouraged to make choices that place him or her in control. The healing arts are part of the care each patient receives and ranges from massage, to beautiful music, to aromatherapy to performances.

One HCH goal is to create a comfortable, home-like environment. What could be homier than the smell of fresh-baked cookies that recently wafted through the halls of the new Cedar Wing? Burien Goodwill Celebrates its Grand Opening

   

Burien Goodwill, located at the corner of 128th and Ambaum in Burien, celebrated its ribbon cutting ceremony on Thurs., Jan. 10, 2002 at 9:45 a.m. Newly-elected Burien Mayor Wing Woo gave a brief speech and cut the ribbon, after being introduced by Seattle Goodwill Board of Directors Secretary Mike Killeen.

The ribbon cutting marks the first ever Seattle Goodwill store, bringing the Seattle area total to 11 store locations, including one outlet store. Not only is the Seattle Goodwill celebrating the opening of its Burien location, but Goodwill International is also celebrating its Centennial anniversary this year. Seattle Goodwill, a non-profit organization, receives no government funding or United Way support. 

"The Goodwill has had great significance for me and my family," Burien Mayor Woo said. He said in his speech that he came to America with his parents and other siblings, with only one suitcase. Goodwill was able to aid Mayor Woo's family and helped them to get established after the move.

Seattle Goodwill began in 1923 by a small group of businessmen that desired to carry the mission of job training established by the Goodwill organization from its original location in Boston, Mass. Presently, Goodwill has over 200 independent member organizations throughout the world. 

"We [the country] are experiencing uncertain economic times, so, Goodwill stores offer real value to customers of all economic levels," Seattle Goodwill Public Relations Director Alice Braverman said. In October 2001, Goodwill's sales were up 5% over October 2000 at all 10 store locations. 

Goodwill is also well known for its services in providing adult education and employment training, which are supported by store sales of donated goods. The organization also receives foundation, corporate funding and individual financial donations.  "I joined Goodwill because I've always been very impressed with its mission to the community," Braverman said.  Braverman has been involved in human services for years and enjoys utilizing her skills at Goodwill. 

Goodwill's new generation stores provide shoppers with pleasant and comfortable shopping environments, good lighting and excellent quality merchandise, including frequent rotations of merchandise donations for shopping variety.  Goodwill's shoppers cross all financial lines, from lower incomes to higher incomes.  According to Braverman, all shoppers can find "high quality merchandise at fair prices, and value and treasured collectables."  Goodwill's Retail Operations hope to open two new stores in the northern Puget Sound region each year.
